GRANTS AND AWARDS
2011 CORE Grant winners announced
The Michigan Council of Osteopathic Promotion (MCOP) met on Thursday, October 20th to discuss the 2011 CORE Grant entries. After deliberation over 23 entries that were received, the committee narrowed it down to three winners. Each winner will receive a $1,000 grant to help his or her project advance. Winners were chosen based on their proposal’s ability to embody the osteopathic values of preventative health care.
The 2011 CORE Grant recipients are:
- The Pontiac Dermatology Residency Program for their free skin cancer screening program during Melanoma/Skin Cancer detection and prevention month in May, 2012. The money will be used to raise awareness of this program by purchasing advertisements through radio and television, as well as funds for mailers to area physicians and community groups. Educational materials, such as bookmarks, will also be purchased.
- Shane R. Sergent and Travis Gordon for their proposal entitled; Sustainable Medicine: The International Osteopathic Approach. These MSUCOM students have been leading international research and clinical medical teams consisting of Michigan physicians, medical students and undergraduates, that have been investigating preventative strategies in the Peruvian communities which they serve. The focus has been sustainable medicine in the absence of these trips. The funding will primarily be for advertisements and to raise awareness of these trips, but it will also provide transportation of the resources they need to bring sustainable medicine to Peru.
- Naomie Warner and Hillsdale Ophthalmology residents Matthew Lawrence and Erin Benjamin for their plan to provide a free clinic to the residents in the Hillsdale area. The grant money will go toward purchasing pen lights, eye charts, opthamaloscopes for evaluating the eye and glasses for individuals who need them.
Congratulations to our 2011 CORE grant winners! We are excited to see how your projects further the osteopathic profession!
