GRANTS AND AWARDS

Two Receive 2009 MOA Core Grants

The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) awarded two $1,000 MOA Core Grants as part of the MOA Core Grant Program.  Those receiving the grants were Keith R. Barber, D.O., of Rehabilitation Specialists of Monroe, for the program “Immune Support Educational Program” and Nicholas Urbanczyk, D.O., of St. John Hospital & Medical Center, St. Clair Shores, for the program “Can Group Visits Improve Metabolic Control in Type II Diabetes?”

The MOA Core Grant was established by the MOA’s Michigan Council of Osteopathic Physicians (MCOP) in 2007 to recognize and support initiatives that demonstrate a commitment to primary care and prevention, which make up the “core” of good health, and are one of the unique tenets of osteopathic medicine.  Grant recipients are selected based on their submitted project’s need, feasibility, impact on target audience and how well the project embodies the osteopathic values of preventive health.  Details on the two 2009 MOA Core Grant winners will be featured in future issues of the MOA TRIAD as well as on the MOA Website.

Applications for the 2010 MOA Core Grant will be available in May of 2010, watch for details.

MOA Charitable Fund Medical Mission
The Michigan Osteopathic Association Charitable Fund proudly presented its first grant award to the interns and residents of Botsford Hospital, Farmington Hills, in support of the 2009 Guatemala Medical Mission trip. Botsford Hospital hosts the medical mission trip each year to provide basic medical, nutritional and hygienic care to some of Guatemala’s poverty-ridden citizens, some who have never been treated by medical professionals.

The MOA Medical Mission Fund, whose goal it is to offer supplemental funding for D.O.s who engage in medical missions to developing nations, was established by MOA past Presidents John Everett, D.O., Lewin Wyatt, D.O. and past MOA Trustee John Floreno, D.O.

“Your funds aided us in seeing over 4,500 people in two weeks, with patients ranging in age from a two-day-old to a 98-year-old. We did some good down there this year and may have even saved some lives,” said David Kanze, D.O., one of the participants in the 2009 Guatemala Medical Mission trip.

The MOA Charitable Fund is a 501c3 fund. All donations are tax deductible. To make a donation, send a check made out to the MOA Charitable Fund to the MOA office at 2445 Woodlake Circle, Okemos, MI, 48864, or contact the MOA at (800) 657-1556.
