FAQs
Why should I get involved in MOPAC?
Insurance companies are happy when physicians do not take part in the political process because it allows them to define issues of importance to you. Campaigns cost money and if you do not participate in your profession’s PAC you put your profession at risk, your practice at risk, and you jeopardize your patients’ access to quality health care. We believe that, while it may often seem as though you have no voice in politics, this is one of the best ways to ensure your interest are protected. If you don’t speak up, who will?
What does PAC stand for?
PAC stands for “political action committee.”
What is a PAC?
A PAC is an organized group of people that works to elect political candidates it believes will advance legislation in support of its cause. PAC refers to political committees registered with the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Separate segregated funds (SSFs), like MOPAC, are political committees established and administered by corporations, labor unions, membership organizations or trade associations. PAC’s may only solicit contributions from individuals associated with the sponsoring organization.
What is MOPAC?
MOPAC is the Political Action Committee of the Michigan Osteopathic Association. With MOPAC, MOA can provide members the opportunity to be politically involved in campaigns and elections.
Who can contribute to MOPAC?
MOA members may contribute to MOPAC. Members make it possible for MOPAC and the osteopathic profession to have a significant impact in elections. Through contributions, members are able to attend special events and meetings, have access to key political news, and – most importantly – help MOPAC increase its strength as the advocate for the osteopathic profession in campaigns and elections.
How is my contribution used?
MOPAC political activities are funded by voluntary contributions of its members. Contributions are used to fund political programs and for direct support of pro-physician candidates.
Who does MOPAC support?
MOPAC supports pro-physician candidates for state office. The decision to support an individual is based on an evaluation of the candidate’s legislative voting records, the candidate’s position on key physician issues, input from osteopathic physicians in the state or district, and the political environment.
How can I recommend a candidate for MOPAC support?
MOPAC welcomes and encourages member input on pro-physician candidates running in their districts. Contact Kris Nicholoff, MOA CEO/Executive Director, with questions about MOA legislative activities or to recommend a candidate for MOPAC support.
What is MOPAC’s success rate of monies they have allocated in the past?
Over 90% of our contributions have gone to winning candidates.
Is my contribution tax deductible?
Unfortunately, no, but your contribution will go a long way in helping us elect leaders who support osteopathic physicians.
How else can I get involved with MOPAC?
You can get involved by hosting or attending a local osteopathic family sponsored fundraiser.
If I do not have a credit card /I am uncomfortable with providing a credit card over the phone, how else can I contribute?
You can contribute through the secure MOA physician Web site or we can send you a postage paid envelope which may be returned with a personal check or credit card number. If you have any questions about making a contribution, call Jennifer, MOA Committee Liaison, at 800-657-1556.
Can I make my contribution with a corporate check?
No, state law mandates political action committees can only accept funds made by personal checks or credit cards.
What if I cannot commit to any level right now, may I make a smaller contribution?
Of course, we will be happy to take any donation you can manage and recognize you as a MOPAC Generous Contributor.
How are giving decisions made?
Kevin McKinney, MOPAC consultant, presents a proposed budget to the MOPAC committee members and the committee members then vote to accept or reject the proposed budget. Once a budget is accepted, members can suggest candidates they believe will be an advocate for the osteopathic profession. Kevin McKinney and Kris Nicholoff take in members’ input and ultimately make the final decision on how to allocate their monies among candidates.
