DR. SEVENSMA AWARDED HONORARY LIFE PROFESSIONAL AWARD BY MICHIGAN OSTEOPATHIC ASSOCIATION

Dearborn, Michigan—Susan Sevensma, D.O., of Grand Rapids, was given an Honorary Life Professional Award by the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) in recognition of her many hours of service as the 2007-08 president of the MOA Board of Trustees. She received the award during the MOA House of Delegates meeting held in conjunction with the MOA’s 109th Annual Postgraduate Convention and Scientific Seminar at the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn, Michigan.

“The leadership Dr. Sevensma provided during her year as MOA President will have a lasting impact on the MOA and this state’s osteopathic profession. Dr. Sevensma brought the concepts of practice transformation and the advanced medical home to the forefront and worked to provide guidance for implementation and education on how they provide benefits to physicians and patients alike,” said Dennis Paradis, M.P.H., MOA Executive Director.

Dr. Sevensma, a board certified family practitioner, currently serves as director of medical education at Metro Health Hospital in Grand Rapids; medical director of Breton Health Center in Grand Rapids; and program director for Metro Health’s family practice residency. She has staff privileges at both Metro Health Hospital and the Butterworth Campus of Spectrum Health Care in Grand Rapids.

Dr. Sevensma received her Bachelor of Science degree from Grand Valley State University, graduating with high honors. She received her Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM) where she received the Judith K. Weiswasser Award for Outstanding Woman Graduate from MSUCOM. Dr. Sevensma is currently an assistant clinical professor at MSUCOM; and assistant regional dean of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri.

In 2005, Dr. Sevensma received the American Osteopathic Foundation Breath of Life Award, and in 1997, she was named Osteopathic Family Physician of theYear by the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians. She has served on Gov. Granholm’s State Planning Project for the Uninsured, the Governor’s Task Force on Elder Abuse and the Michigan Osteopathic Medical Advisory Board at Michigan State University.
